Guide To BUS Grant for UK Homeowners-2024

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a government effort to encourage homes in England and Wales to switch to eco-friendly heating. If you decide to select us as your heat pump installers, we can handle the application process for you. Here’s What you can get

We can help You get:

  • £7,500 off for installing an air source heat pump
  • £7,500 off for installing a ground source heat pump, which includes water source heat pumps
  • £5,000 off for installing a biomass boiler

If you applied before Monday, October 23, 2023, you won’t get the increased grant. Here are the grant levels for applications submitted before that date:

  • £5,000 off for installing an air source heat pump
  • £6,000 off for installing a ground source heat pump, including water source heat pumps
  • £5,000 off for installing a biomass boiler

Overview of BUS

The government has set BUS to run from April 1, 2022, to March 31, 2028, with a total budget of £450 million and an annual cap of £150 million. The aim is to support approximately 60,000 renewable heat installations over the six-year period.

Who Can Apply

To join BUS, your home must have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) less than 10 years old. While you don’t need a whole-house check, certain rules apply. For example, listed properties and those in conservation areas have exemptions. Specific rules exist for different heating options, like air source heat pumps (ASHPs), ground source heat pumps (GSHPs), and biomass boilers.

  • ASHP and GSHP: You can switch if you have a fossil fuel or electric heating system. Custom new builds and exempted listed properties qualify.
  • Biomass: Only rural, off-grid homes can apply, and you need an emissions certificate.

Eligible Technologies for BUS Grant

To be eligible for BUS, your heating system must have accreditation from the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) and ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) must achieve a minimum efficiency rating of 2.8 Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP).

What systems are not eligible For BUS Grant?

Hybrid systems and heating systems relying solely on fossil fuels are not eligible. BUS aims for comprehensive renewable heating solutions.

How Vouchers Work

Registered installers easily handle the process of obtaining BUS vouchers.

  • Stage 1: Application: Installers give you a quote and apply for the voucher on your behalf.
  • Stage 2: Redemption: After installation, installers provide proof, and the grant goes directly to them.

Time Limits

Vouchers for air source heat pumps (ASHPs) and biomass have a validity period of 3 months, while ground source heat pump (GSHP) vouchers maintain a duration of 6 months. When the funding is low, there could be limits on the number of vouchers distributed each quarter.

Keeping You Safe

BUS follows the same safety measures as the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). Make sure to use certified companies for your peace of mind.

No Strings Attached

Unlike other programs, BUS doesn’t require you to report on your heating system’s performance afterward. While it’s encouraged, there’s no extra funding for smart meters or monitoring.

BUS represents a significant stride toward more environmentally friendly heating solutions. BUS aims to make air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, and biomass boilers accessible to more homes by providing grants and ensuring safety, contributing to a cleaner future.
