The cost of installing an air source heat pump in the UK typically ranges from £8,000 to £18,000, depending on the size and efficiency of the system, the complexity of the installation, and the local labour rates. The average cost is around £12,000. But now with the £7500 BUS grant, it can cost you as little as £1000.

While it is possible to install an air source heat pump yourself, it is not recommended. The installation process is complex and requires specialised skills and knowledge. If you are not experienced in plumbing, electrical and heating system design it is best to hire a qualified installer to ensure that the system is installed correctly and safely. To access the BUS grant, the installation must be carried out to MCS standards and commissioned by an MCS engineer. We install to the highest MCS standards and offer a commissioning service.

The installation of an air source heat pump typically involves the following steps:

  1. Site survey: A qualified installer will assess your property to determine the best location for the outdoor unit. We will then assess your heating and hot water system and design your installation accordingly, making recommendations for upgrades as necessary. We will take room measurements, inspect your windows and insulation or work off of floor plans, ready for your heat loss calculation.
  2.  Heat loss calculation & proposal: We will then carry out a full heat loss report for your property and provide you with a fully inclusive quote for your air source heat pump installation.
  3. BUS grant application: We will apply for the BUS grant and carry out a DNO application on your behalf
  4. Installation Of The Base & Heat Pump: A suitable base will be installed and your heat pump will be put in place.
  5. Pipework installation: Pipes will be run between the heat pump, the hot water cylinder and any radiators or manifolds.
  6. Electrical installation: The heat pump and indoor controls will be connected safely to the electrical supply.
  7. Commissioning: The system will be tested and commissioned to ensure that it is working correctly. We will optimise your system and controls to ensure that you get the highest possible efficiencies from your air source heat pump installation.
  8. BUS Grant: On successful completion of all installation works and all paperwork we will refund you the £7500 BUS grant. 

You may have heard some horror stories where homeowners have forked out their hard earned money for an air source heat pump and their electrical bills are astronomical. This is not the fault of the air source heat pump. This is down to poor installation and poor system design. An air source heat pump should really be a minimum of 350% efficient on average throughout the year, our installations are typically 400% efficient and above. This is completely down to excellent system design and perfect installation. Our installations will save you money on your utility bills. 

Air source heat pumps are most suitable for homes. Largely speaking any heating system can be designed to work at low flow temperatures although some additional insulation may be recommended. In certain cases, placement of the heat pump and cylinder can be a challenge.

Air source heat pumps can save you money on your heating bills provided that your heating system is designed correctly. They are also a more sustainable option than traditional fossil fuel-based heating systems. We can design your system to work at lower flow temperatures, we also create a control strategy and use weather compensation to ensure minimal electrical usage. On top of this with our innovative battery storage we can use lower overnight tariffs to charge your battery, using the power stored in the batteries to help power the heat pump during the day.
